A period of political turmoil, industrial change and revolution, the rise of nationalism, colonialism and the ensuing theatres of war were reflected in many ways in the Arts. They moved from late Romanticism to France and Modernity influenced by Baudelaire’s writings, the impact of the Realism of Courbet and Manet through to the Impressionism of Monet and the individuality of Renoir and Degas.
The music of Debussy and Ravel reflected the symbolic association of music with art,
whilst in Italy the operas of Verdi and Puccini featured the rise of nationalism and
the political turmoil in Europe. Wagner stands out as the first great nationalist
composer in the Germanic tradition but should also include Brahms, Mahler and
Tchaikovsky.
Writers and poets also covered those momentous changes – such as Zola, Victor
Hugo, Dickens and poets such as Tennyson and Hausman in a Shropshire Lad on the horrors of war.
And there is the inimitable political commentary of Gilbert and Sullivan!
